Waves Conference Speakers


The Waves Vienna Conference will take place from October 2nd to October 3rd 2014 and is organized by Waves Vienna and Austrian Music Export. The program is meant to be the basis and inspiration for a long-term, pan-European cooperation and addresses current issues in the music industry, as well as the key subject of Eastern and Western European exchange. The keynote address, “The Future of Music Management,” will be given by music industry legend Keith Harris, and further speakers will include producer and manager Peter Jenner (UK), music journalist and consultant Allan McGowan (UK), Kristin Thomson of the Future of Music Coalition (US), and agent, manager, and label exec Robert Singerman (US).

Allan McGowan has some forty years of experience in the advertising, music and entertainment industries. He has worked in record retail, as a concert promoter, artist manager and booking agent. At present he is News Editor for Vip News, an on-line data and news service for the live music industry, and is Associate Editor of IQ Magazine – the monthly journal of the International Live Music Conference. He also administrates music-publishing company Wintrup Songs Ltd and consults to many international trade events.

Based in Thessaloniki, Anastasios Diolatzis has been active in the Greek electronic music scene for over 15 years. He is the musical director of Reworks International Music festival and a co-founder and member of NON, an artist collective that has so far helped to present the works of more than 1000 artists in over 600 organized local events. As an artist he goes by the name of Ison, is a co-founder and member of the Actor One music project and the host of the NON Sessions radio show, which has been airing since 2006.

From 1987 to 1992, Andrew Campbell worked as a freelance journalist and photographer (Junge Presse Berlin, Berliner Morgenpost, BZ, Prinz Berlin etc.) in both East and West Berlin. After the fall of the Wall, Andrew Campbell hired on with Sony Music Germany and was in charge of radio promotion and artist development, remaining with them until 1992. Following this, Andrew Campbell founded Gordeon Music Promotion in 1992 and later the label G-Records, the publishing company Edition JA and recently the management company G-Management.

Menart is a Sony Music licensee for the whole region of ex-Yugoslavia, domestic record label, publishing agency, booking agent, concert promoter. Also vice president of local record label collecting society ZAPRAF and Croatian phonographic association HDU – IFPI national group for Croatia. Current general secretary of the national music award Porin.

Menace has worked with a range of successful recording artists, record producers and songwriters. Since 2003 he has taught at various UK Universities. At the University Of Hertfordshire he leads the Music and Entertainment Industry Management program. He co-authored the 3-year ‘Music Experience and Behaviour in Young people’ study and co-edits the International Journal of Music Business Research.

Experienced music manager and promoter from Croatia. Has managed one of the most successful Croatian punk bands – Overflow. Works as a PR of two international festivals in Croatia Outlook and Dimensions. Currently lives in London and works with Glastonbury and several projects in the music industry.

Initiator of Ö-Slam, the Austrian poetry slam championship (together with Markus Köhle). Numerous performances and releases with the band “mieze medusa & tenderboy”.

Ed Lilo works in events in London, primarily as Senior Events Manager for Vice UK. Focusing on new music across every genre, Ed books around 20 events per month under banners including Vice, Noisey, KANADA and One Hundred. He is also responsible for programming The Old Blue Last in Shoreditch and Birthdays in Dalston. Prior to working at Vice, Ed launched and managed The Green Door Store in Brighton. He has been running events independently and on behalf of clients for 12 years, from 50 to 2,000 capacity. He has also worked as a strategist for several advertising agencies.

Elke Schüßler is an Assistant Professor at the Management Department at Freie Universität Berlin. She does research and teaches on issues of management, focusing especially on dynamics of globalization, digitalization and climate change and the development of new forms of value creation. A particular interest revolves around the governance of organizations and inter-organizational relationships on regional, national and transnational levels and the tension between path dependence and creativity in organizational and institutional change.

Emilien Moyon, PhD. is the Director of the Global Entertainment and Music Business Program at Berklee College of Music, Valencia Campus. He holds a PhD in Strategy for which he received the 2012 award for the best PhD dissertation in France. Dr. Moyon is also a co-founder of the Business Model Community, an academic community involving more than 250 researchers worldwide. To share the results of his research, Emilien Moyon co-organizes Rethink Music and is the founder and director of TEDxBerkleeValencia.

Franz X.A. Zipperer organized his first concert in his early twenties. In Düsseldorf he started building a communication center for arts – from an empty warehouse to a full working Ltd. After several booking jobs, he was part of the off-air-marketing-team of the young radio WDR/EINS LIVE. From the very beginning he always used to write about music and is currently working for the magazines: slam!, rckstr, westzeit, Nitro. Audiophil, Jazzthetik, Jazz’n’More, Kulturnews, Folker or taz. He produces a monthly radio show called “Soundtraveller – In 80 Beats around the world” that is broadcasted in Hamburg and Berlin. He lives in Berlin.

Georg is CEO and co-founder of Play.fm, a music streaming service based in Vienna. 2008 Georg became CEO after running Play.fm as a non-commercial project for several years. Georg was a passionate DJ and event promoter when he had the idea to record DJs in different clubs and launch Play.fm in 2004. Always fascinated by digital technologies, he also worked at milestone management, a consultancy for digital content applications, for AcademyNOW, an e-learning company, and for the European Center for Development Policy Management in 2000.

Grimur Atlason is the current manager of Iceland Airwaves music festival. This will be his fifth year managing Iceland Airwaves, which was established in 1999. During his time as manager, Grimur has worked with Björk, Elektro Guzzi, Sigur Rós, Robyn, Beach House, Kraftwerk, John Grant, FM Belfast, Haim and many others. Grimur has been promoting and managing bands since he was 16. He has worked with hundreds of bands such as Sonic Youth, Morrissey, Antony and The Johnsons, Belle and Sebastian, just to name a few.

Ian Smith is the CEO of Frusion Music Intl and has many years of work experience in all sectors of the music industry. He created a local office in Warsaw and Prague, plus Frusion’s main base in the UK and secondary base in Vienna. In 2011 he created Frusion matrix which generates a new way of international co-operation.

Ilya Bortnyuk has been active in the music industry since 1990. He has worked as an art director, host of a radio show, head of a music label, manager and A&R director of the Russian major represented by EMI, Virgin, Mute. In 2001 he founded Light Music company, which has become one of the main independent promoting companies in Russia. LM company has brought many great artists to the country, including Kraftwerk, Franz Ferdinand, Massive Attack, Air, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, PJ Harvey, Gogol Bordello, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, and many more.


John_RobbJohn Robb (Musician/Author, UK)
John Robb grew up in Blackpool till punk rock came along and saved his life. Naively believing that you really could do what you wanted, he went on to form the loudest group ever, the Membranes. He then went on to write for the rock press with Sounds and was the first person to interview Nirvana and coined the expression Brit-pop. His music and culture website louderthanwar.com is currently one of the biggest music key sites and he does loads of TV and radio stuff and tours with his punk band Goldblade as well as the reformed Membranes.

Jonas Vogt was born in Bonn and studied political science and art history in Cologne and Vienna. For 3 years he worked at The Gap, a Viennese magazine for popular culture. Since 2014 he is editor-in-chief of Noisey, the VICE music channel, in Austria and Switzerland.

At the age of seven, Karl Fluch was seduced by Elvis to rock’n’roll and later somehow became the culture editor of the daily Austrian newspaper ‘Der Standard’.

Keith Harris began to work in the industry in 1974. He joined Motown in 1976 – 1978 and ended up as the General Manager. In 1978, he moved to LA to work with Stevie Wonder and became his Operations Manager. Returning to the UK in 1982, he formed his own management company and was involved in the management of various UK based artists, while still representing Stevie Wonder. He now works as Director of Performer Affairs at PPL.

Kevin is the Event Executive at The Great Escape, Europe’s leading festival for new music and new music business based in Brighton, UK. Kevin’s primary role is to develop international and domestic partnerships that facilitate global talent showcasing at the festival. Since joining TGE in January 2012, Kevin has overseen an expansion of international programming at the event and in the most recent edition artists from 26 different nationalities were represented.

Klaus Fiehe first came to music as a saxophone player during the 70s, touring with jazz-rock-fusion bands around Germany. Later on he became a member of Geier Sturzflug (“Bruttosozialprodukt #1 in Austria/Germany) and The Bollock Brothers (“Faith Healer”). He then started as a radio host in the mid 80s and soon got to WDR based in Cologne, where he´s currently hosting two music shows (1LIVE FIEHE + Plan B with Klaus Fiehe) – and another one at Byte.FM (Hamburg). His musical style ranges from all facets of UK Bass to Beat Science, House, Indie and even Folk.

Krešimir Blažević, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Muzika.hr, the most visited Croatian (as well as regional) specialized online publication dedicated to music. In his long-term cooperation with the music industry, he participated in the creation of the music scene. Through systematic support of artists and their work he laid the foundations of many successful music careers. He is a member of the jury for the Croatian records awards Porin and Croatian Music Union Award Status.


kristin_thomsonKristin Thomson (Future of Music Coalition, US) VMBRD + WAVES
Kristin Thomson is a consultant for the US-based nonprofit Future of Music Coalition, which advocates for musicians. She co-directs FMC’s Artist Revenue Streams research project, which is examining changes in musicians’ sources of income. She is also co-owner of Simple Machines, an independent record label, which released over 70 records and CDs from 1991-1998. She played guitar in the band Tsunami, which released four albums from 1991-1997 and toured extensively. She currently lives near Philadelphia, where she also plays guitar in the lady-powered band Ken.

As senior director of marketing at Astralwerks (a unit of Universal/Capitol Music Group), Lui has overseen marketing & promotion for Swedish House Mafia (multi-platinum single), deadmau5 (Top 10 album in the USA), Hot Chip, Chemical Brothers, Pet Shop Boys, Eric Prydz, Porter Robinson, Basement Jaxx, Röyksopp and many others. He also worked at V2 Records, where he promoted top-selling releases by Moby, Mercury Rev and Underworld. He started in the music business as music director at WNYU-New York.

Marc Marot has worked with some of the UK’s most successful artists over the past 33 years. He started as a musician but moved over to music publishing at the beginning of the 1980s, running Chris Blackwell’s Blue Mountain Music, the music publisher U2, Bob Marley and many others. In 1996 he merged Island, Universal and MCA records into its current structure, which is now the most successful record label in the UK. He is currently the Chairman of the Crown Talent and Media group, which manages Jessie J, Union J, Maya Jane Coles and the Sugarbabes amongst a roster of 20 acts.

Mario Grdošić started in the music business promoting small underground shows at the end of high school in his home town of Karlovac. At age 23 he started working at a record company, later in the publishing business, until finally settling in live music. He started his own company at the end of 2011 and now promotes regional and international artists, manages bands and books tours. The company (LAA) also takes care of PR and publishing for the artists it works with.


Mate_SkugorMate Škugor (Žedno Uho/SuperUho, HR)
Mate Škugor was born in the beautiful coastal town of Sibenik where his life and musical journey began. 39 years later he came back to his hometown to start the Terraneo Festival and now this year also launched the new SuperUho Festival. During his studies in Zagreb, he started to promote music in a KSET club, where many great bands performed from 1997 – 2006. He then moved on to the Student Center Zagreb where he became director of the music program and got the chance to promote music in 5 different venues. Since 2010 he is fully independent. Besides organizing the Zedno Uho Festival and SuperUho Festival, he is also a Croatian promoter of the Electronic Beats Festival.


Michal_KaščákMichal Kaščák (Pohoda, SK)
Michal Kaščák is a musician and promoter. Since 1985 he has been a member of the band Bez ladu a skladu, since 2000 of the band Neuropa, and is a music composer of different movie and theater projects in Slovakia and Czech republic. He is the founder and director of Pohoda, which started as a local event and has turned into the most prestigious festival in Slovakia. Each year, about 200 artists from more than 20 countries perform at the festival. Apart from music, various other forms of art play a major role in the festival each year.

Nick Hobbs is the owner and MD of Istanbul-based Charmenko and co-owner of Charm Music Czechia and Charm Music Poland. He is a dormant rock-singer and artist manager, and an active agent, promoter, event and venue booker, specialized in Eastern Europe since the early 80’s.

Based in Hamburg, Nora Söder studied musicology from 2001 – 2006 and is a MA of systematic musicology. During her studies she worked as an intern in various artist agencies. She made her first experiences in the live music industry through her internship at FKP Scorpio in Hamburg. Since 2006 she has been booking tours for national and international artists (including Foo Fighters, Placebo, Blink 182, Passenger, George Ezra, Polica, etc.) at FKP Scorpio.

Paul Resnikoff is the founder and publisher of Digital Music News (digitalmusicnews.com), a premier industry source for news, information, and analysis. Resnikoff also heads a boutique music industry consultancy and is expanding the DMN concept into TV (look out for ‘Channel Daily’…). He earned his degree from Stanford University.

Peter Jenner is legendary in the music business. One time manager to Pink Floyd, The Clash, Ian Dury & Michael Franti (amongst others), he currently manages Billy Bragg. He is at the forefront of the debates surrounding the digital use of music and is President Emeritus of the IMMF, a director of the UK MMF and is on the advisory board of the FAC. His overriding interest is in securing artists’ rights and fair payment. He is a Visiting Professor for the university of Hertfordshire and for University if Adger in Norway.

Peter Smidt studied art and art management at the university Groningen Holland (RUG). Smidt has worked for over 20 years as a concert and festival promoter for Grand Theatre Groningen, Zomermanifestatie Groningen, Bevrijdings Pop Haarlem and Oosterpoort, Groningen and created events like Eurosonic Noorderslag, Eurosonic Noorderslag Conference , R&B Night and others. Smidt started working for Buma Cultuur in 1995. Buma Cultuur is the BUMA funded organization for promotion of Dutch music and repertoire in and outside of Holland.

Since 2008 Rainer Praschak has been working at mica – music austria as a project manager and music business consultant. He has more than fifteen years of experience in the music business (A&R, product manager, PR and marketing for indie and major labels in Austria) and currently manages several cultural and research projects funded by the EU. He was one of the established representatives of the electronic club music in Vienna and has earned a remarkable reputation over the years, mainly as a radio DJ, club DJ and promoter of his own club nights.

He’s helped build businesses, non-profits and his mission is building tech solutions challenging stasis. He directed the EU funded (European Music Office, US) and the French Music Export Office, NA for 5 years. He represents Brazilian Music, through Brasil Music & Artes and consults Canadian Music Week, LyricFind, Heaven11, .MUSIC, Sync Summit, Marcato, 88tc88, Pleimo, Bainil, Hollywood Elite Composers.


Sander_KerkhofSander Kerkhof (aka DJ Sandeman, 3voor12, NL)
Sander Kerkhof is a freelance music journalist and DJ who lives in Amsterdam. He works for Dutch national public broadcasting agency VPRO 3voor12. He currently is the program manager for their weekly Saturday night dance music show. He has worked on a wide array of projects for Red Bull Music Academy, Amsterdam Dance Event, Sonos and others. He also is one of the curators for Pause Magazine, a new app that gathers the best worldwide music writing. As DJ Sandeman he makes the popular Song Of The Year and Lowlands Festival mixtapes.

Born in Zagreb, Sanjin Đukić has been in the business since 1996: First as part of the marketing department of EMI’s licensee in Croatia, Dallas Records (1996-2010). Founder of Pozitivan koncert and Mars Festival, PR of Hartera Festival for several years, Head of Exit Festival promo team in Croatia (2006-present), PR of Culture Club Revelin Dubrovnik (2011-2012), MTV Hrvatska (2010-present) and AXN Adria (2012-present). Since 2013 head of marketing and promotion at Los Angeles Agency (LAA). LAA is promoter, booker and/or agency to artists such as Slayer, Skunk Anansie, Down, Tegan and Sara, Dillinger Escape Plan, Morcheeba, and many many more. LAA is also the official agency of Culture Factory Zagreb, MTV Hrvatska, AXN Adria.


Stefan_LehmkuhlStefan Lehmkuhl (Melt/DE)
In 1999 Stefan Lehmkuhl started as a trainee at the German magazines Intro and Festivalguide. Lehmkuhl soon became the editor for live-entertainment & events and head of the marketing/sales department. Since 2004 his main focus has been on the Melt! Festival where he is the artistic director. In 2008 he founded the booking agency Melt! Booking, which represents artists like Fever Ray, Booka Shade, Tricky, Tiga and Junior Boys for the German market and Schlachthofbronx, Daniel Haaksman, Edu K, Bonaparte, Bodi Bill and others worldwide. Lehmkuhl also consults corporate brands in booking bands and DJs and programs various events like ‘Electronic Beats’ and ‘T-Mobile Streetgigs’.

Stefan Niederwieser studied musicology and philosophy in Vienna and Marseille. He is editor-in-chief of The Gap, twitterer, DJ and multi-channel media consumer. As a musician, he has twice been nominated for the Austrian Amadeus Award with the electronic hybrid band TNT Jackson. As an author, he attempts to see music not only as an entertainment product but also as an exciting expression of its time and the social, cultural and technical circumstances from which it grows.

tatjana_domanyTatjana Domany (OMF/AME, AT)
Tatjana Domany studied Political Science, Communication Studies and Musicology and used to work for many years at the Viennese label G-Stone Recordings. She currently works for Austrian Music Export on behalf of the music export department of the Austrian Music Fund (www.musikfonds.at).

Thomas Zierhofer-Kin has been working as the artistic director of the Donaufestival in Krems, Austria, since 2005. He is a consultant for the Cultural Senator for Munich Prof.DDr. Lydia Hartl and Eliette von Karajan (Prix Eliette). He is also a jury member of the City of Vienna, Tanzquartier Vienna, Departure Vienna, the Government of Lower Austria and works as an author, performance artist and DJ.

Born in Germany. Lived and worked Germany, Croatia, Rome, New York City. Produced and performed live and on productions from New York City, Los Angeles, Japan, Croatia, Italy and Serbia. Worked with Harold Perrineau, Styles P, Masta Ace, Muzz Skillings – Living Color, Vernon Reed – Living Color, Coati Mundi- Kid Creole and the Coconats , Buddy Hankerson- Slave- Young and Company, Rade Šerbedžija, Ekatarina Velika, Parni Valjak, Dino Merlin, Haustor, Cacadou Look, Josipa Lisac, Pankrti, Plavi orkestar, Željko Bebek, Mitar Subotić Suba, Electro Team, Dubrovnik Summer Festival. At present he is the head of international music publisher IDM Music.

Vladimir Kravchenko is the CEO at COLISIUM. After studying music management in St. Petersburg, he started working for Kapkan Records as an A&R manager in 2003, later as a booking agent. In 2007 he started the first International Music and Media Convention in Russia – COLISIUM. In 2009 he then founded the export agency INDEX to represent the best Russian artists worldwide. He is also a host on the biggest online radio in Russia and executive producer of various TV specials, CD releases, club events and radio shows.

Vladimir Philippov was born in Perm, Russia near the Ural mountains. After graduating from the Perm’s Aviation College, he started to work with record production and distribution companies in Moscow. From 1992 – 2002 he was in charge of artist bookings, promotion and record productions. From 2000 – 2009 he worked on licensing foreign repertoire and releases to domestic labels in Russia and CIS. In 2010 he established his own record and publishing company Broma16. In 2011 he developed the global rights administration platform Heaven11.
