Wednesday 21 May 2014, 7.00pm | Austrian Cultural Forum London

Renowned violinist David Alberman, principal second violin at the London Symphony Orchestra, performs a special concert at the ACF London focusing on new music from Austria. David Alberman has selected pieces by the Austria-based composers Detlev Müller-Siemens, Johannes Kretz, and Horst Ebenhöh from an open call for new compositions. Müller-Siemens and Kretz will attend the concert and speak briefly about their works. David will be joined by pianist Rolf Hind for a performance of Maurice Ravel’s spectacular Sonata Nr 2, as well as for the UK premiere of a piece by Austrian composer Reinhard Fuchs. David will also perform a piece by London-based composer Roberto David Rusconi.  Alberman and Hind both have a strong interest in contemporary music and have performed with some of the leading orchestras in Europe.

David Alberman

Born in London, David Alberman received his early tuition from Mary Long, Sheila Nelson, Emmanuel Hurwitz and Vera Kantrovich, and received his LRAM diploma from the Royal Academy of music at the age of sixteen. He studied the violin privately with Prof. Igor Ozim in Cologne, and then studied Classical Languages and Philosophy at Oxford University for four years before returning to music. Having been a concertmaster of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, where he led the orchestra for such conductors as Claudio Abbado and Sir Georg Solti, a long-standing interest in contemporary music led him in 1986 to join the internationally renowned Arditti Quartet, who specialise in new music.

In 1995, he formed a Duo with the virtuoso pianist Rolf Hind. Since then, the Alberman/Hind Duo has played recitals in the major European cities including Vienna, Darmstadt, London, Stockholm, Oslo, Stuttgart and Brussels. In addition to recitals with the Duo and teaching (he is a Guest Professor of New String Music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London), he became a Principal of the London Symphony Orchestra in 1999, and has played as guest concertmaster in groups as varied as the London Symphony Orchestra itself, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Recherche Freiburg, Sinfonia 21, and the London Sinfonietta. He is a keen chamber musician, appearing with groups such as the London Sinfonietta, Nash and Razumovsky ensembles. He has appeared as soloist with, among others, the Orchestre de Lille, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra in Vienna. David Alberman plays on a Guarneri Del Gesu violin of 1736.

Rolf Hind

Rolf Hind has worked closely with living composers across a broad range of styles: from John Adams and Tan Dun, to Ligeti and Lachenmann; Xenakis and Messiaen, to Simon Holt and Judith Weir.

Born in London and now living there after studies at the Royal College of Music and Los Angeles, his career has many facets. He appears regularly at new music festivals throughout Europe: in Brussels, Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Darmstadt, Vienna, Strasbourg and Paris. He is in demand as a soloist with all the major BBC orchestras and plays regularly with the London Sinfonietta. Further afield he has made numerous appearances: including with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Radio Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, The Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the South West German Radio Orchestra, the Stockholm Sinfonietta, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and orchestras in Holland, Italy, Ireland, Norway, France, Portugal and the US. As a performer he has had a number of concertos written for him, by Unsuk Chin (BBC NOW) Poul Ruders (LPO) Bent Sorensen (BBCSO/Danish Radio) and Simon Holt (London Sinfonietta).
