Soundings 2010: Inspired by Mahler

Soundings, the ACF’s platform for contemporary music, presents a special tribute to Mahler on the 150th anniversary of his birth. This year’s composers have been invited to compose new works ‘inspired’ by Mahler. From Tuesday 11 – Friday 14 May 2010 composers and musicians will work on these and other scores in rehearsals open to the public and present them at two evening concerts.

Accompanying the music will be interviews with the composers and round table discussions with distinguished personalities of the music world including Gillian Moore, Head of Contemporary Culture at the South Bank Centre; Clark Rundell, Director of Contemporary Music, Head of Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music and Artistic Director of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic’s new music group, Ensemble 10/10; and Matthias Lošek the newly appointed Artistic Director of Wien Modern. The round table discussion will take place on Wednesday 12 May 4 pm and will be chaired by critic and writer Annette Morreau and Andrea Rauter.

This year’s Soundings composers are Gerhard Krammer, Elisabeth Harnik, Stephan Maria Karl from Austria and Emily Howard, Robert Fokkens and Ian Vine from the UK. Participating musicians include the Fidelio Trio (Darragh Morgan, violin; Robin Michael, cello; Mary Dullea, piano and curator), Rowland Sutherland (flute), Loré Lixenberg (mezzo-soprano), Patricia Rozario (soprano), Tom Lessels (clarinet), Tim Lowe, (cello) and Gerald Davidson (speaker).
