This year the singer Tania Saedi presented an immensely diverse, complex and powerful piece of music with her debut album “Exhale” (Monoscope). The Viennese singer with Persian roots bestowed us with eleven extremely strong, well thought out, atmospheric songs, wrapped in a wonderful sonic robe by the sound specialist Markus Kienzl from the Sofa Surfers, leading us in a most exciting way through the various forms of electronic music.
Good things take time. And time is definitely what Tania Saedi used to her advantage. The eleven songs that finally made it onto the debut album are the result of many years of a creative process, in which the singer, musician and composer has been meticulously polishing the perfect sound in collaboration with Markus Kienzl. As it turns out, the hard work has definitely paid off. All the songs on “Exhale” work as a whole, but are still individually extremely diverse, without any deficiencies or mediocre space fillers. Each track stands alone as a work of art in itself and showcases a very wide musical range. Thus, the stylistic gamut runs from highly individual, bass-heavy trip-hop interpretations to unique electro-pop and dub variations to very successful techno experiments.
That certain something extra comes from the very confident voice of Tania Saedi on the microphone. Vocally, the charismatic Viennese singer impressively constitutes how to masterly move on almost any musical terrain. Sometimes she gives us the big diva with a dark, almost menacing side, like on the opener “Someone I’m not”, sometimes saucy and seductive, like on the track “Beauty”, then again fragile and dreamy in beautifully quiet and soulful ballads like “The Boat Song”, “Who Can Be Real” and “Heal”, and in the next moment a pop attitude in the song “a.#10”.
Overall, one can say that Tania Saedi has landed a big hit with “Exhale”. It is a wonderful album that never loses its charm. Whoever wants to get inspired by challenging, thoughtful and emotional electropop, should undergo an intensive listening experience with this album. One thing seems certain, we will definitely hear a lot more from this artist in the future.
