New York salutes Vienna as the “City of Dreams”

From the 21st of February to 16th of March, New York is honoring Austria’s capital city with the festival “Vienna: City of Dreams” organized by the prestigious Carnegie Hall and taking place in leading cultural institutions across the city. For three weeks, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and members of the Vienna State Opera will play the center role of the festival and pay tribute to musical masterpieces of Viennese classicism.

Presented in conjunction with this citywide festival and adding a contemporary counterpoint is the international group exihibition Vienna Complex at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York.  Curated by the Austrian Cosima Rainer, it will be the first exhibition produced under the leadership of the Austrian Cultural Forum’s new director, Christine Moser:

“With a broad program of exhibitions, concerts, film screenings and symposiums, the American public will be offered a top-notch selection of vital artistic impulses that originated from Vienna and Austria.”

Musical highlights are the U.S. premieres of works by the exceptional Austrian composers Olga Neuwirth and Bernhard Gander, as well as a festival day hosted at the popular music venue “Le Poisson Rouge”, which is dedicated to contemporary Austrian improvisation with prominent representatives such as Franz Hautzinger, Martin Siewert, and Helge Hinteregger.

Vienna as a film location is also subject of the film exhibition Vienna Unveiled: A City in Cinema at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Co-curated by the Austrian Film Museum director Alexander Horwath, the two-month-long exhibition will feature 40 motion pictures that deal with the myth and reality of the city Vienna.
