New in the music austria sheet music shop: Georg Friedrich Haas

Digital scores by the Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas are now available for purchase, download and print in the music austria sheet music shop. Haas, whose oeuvre was a key focus of the WIEN MODERN festival in 2014, has emerged as one of the most important international composers of our time.

“We are very pleased to now also be offering works by this groundbreaking composer in our online shop,” says Susanne Amann, head of the music austria sheet music shop.

Easy to access and simple to use, the music austria sheet music shop offers digital scores that can be immediately downloaded as a PDF and printed after purchase. Scores from contemporary Austrian composers are often difficult to find and this is where the online sheet music shop bridges the gap with over 1000 scores in the online store.

At the moment the shop offers 16 works by Georg Friedrich Haas, including all of his eight string quartets. Particular highlights are pieces like his 3rd string quartet “In iij. Noct.“, which is played in complete darkness, or his 7th string quartet, which was commissioned by the Lucerne Festival in 2011. Also available is Georg Friedrich Haas’ “concerto grosso no. 2“, a commissioned piece that was performed at the opening concert of WIEN MODERN in 2014, as well as “limited approximations“, a spectacular concerto for six micro-tonally tuned pianos and orchestra.

Born in Graz in 1953, the composer has been honored with multiple awards – more recent awards include the Grand Austrian State Prize, the International Composition Prize of Salzburg, the Ernst Krenek Prize, a City of Vienna Prize for Music, the Andrzej Dobrowolski Composition Award, and many more.  In September 2013, Georg Friedrich Haas joined Columbia University’s composition faculty as a full-time tenured professor in New York.

The works by Haas are available in the music austria sheet music shop due to the collaboration between mica – music austria and Universal Edition, the Austrian music publisher that represents Georg Friedrich Haas. The catalog of the music publisher Universal Edition, which was founded in 1901 in Vienna, comprises more than 30,000 items and is inextricably linked with the great composers and musical developments of the 20th and 21st centuries. Contemporary music production is a clear focus of the publisher’s program. Highlights of the Universal Edition catalog includes works by Haas, Friedrich Cerha, Johannes Maria Staud, Beat Furrer, Pierre Boulez and Arnold Schoenberg.

The music austria sheet music shop serves two purposes: on the one hand as a platform where Austrian-based music creators can promote and sell their own compositions, and on the other as an important source of sheet music from Austrian composers for musicians, music teachers and music lovers.

The scores cost an average of 10 Euros (some are already available for only 99 Cents – the most expensive costs 70 Euros) and are available in the form of downloadable PDF files. For those who prefer the eBook version, the PDF files are also compatible with tablets. Each score can be viewed in a preview – some works even offer prelistening samples.

For Austrian-based composers the online sheet music shop is a free possibility to sell their digital scores on fair terms. The composers can upload their scores directly to the website and determine their own price. The online sheet music shop also collaborates with a rapid growing number of music publishers that use the platform for sales and promotion.

In the field of contemporary music, the services of mica – music austria experienced a huge boost last year, which also marked the 20th anniversary of the Austrian music information center. In 2014 the online music database, the largest database of contemporary Austrian music, celebrated a significant feat: in May the 1,000th composer was added to the list of composers. The database is the most important international source of comprehensive information on Austrian-based composers, performers and ensembles, with over 42,000 compositions in the directory.
