30 Jahre Wien Modern (c) Bernhard Günther

As part of the mica – music austria focus at WIEN MODERN 2017 we will be hosting a podium discussion in honour of the 30th edition of the festival and to discuss (more than) 30 years of new music, event management, and cultural politics. Festivals can be perceived both as a representative apex of the new music scene and as exceptional events in the “everyday life” of the regular concert programme. They are hubs for the new music network as well as channels of communications to “the outside”. To new audiences, to other genres, to the media, to politics…

In three panels we will discuss the pioneers of new music, the establishment of mature structures and the developments of the last three decades. After the second panel Wien Modern and mica – music austria will host a reception with Federal Minister Thomas Drozda at 18:30 in the foyer of Hall G in the Museums Quartier.
