Klangspuren Schwaz is pleased to announce its first CHAMBER MUSIC LAB – a workshop for string quartets, from September 18 to 26, 2022! In a selection process based on an international call, three young international string quartets will be nominated by the jury consisting of the musicians of JACK Quartet, who will also be conducting training workshops. Applications open on March 4th and end on May 1st, 2022.

In contemporary music, too, the string quartet is considered by many to be the most prestigious discipline in chamber music. This musical and art form with its long history and unbroken vitality that has continued to the present allows an intensive examination of (new) music in the intimate setting of small-scale instrumentation. What could be more obvious than to bring young musicians from all over the world together with the renowned JACK Quartet and to provide a public training camp for them? Including concerts!

In a selection process based on an international call, three young international string quartets will be nominated by the jury consisting of the musicians of JACK Quartet. In Innsbruck at the “Haus der Musik” and at the Mozarteum, the selected string quartets will have the opportunity to work closely with Christopher Otto, Austin Wulliman, John Pickford Richards, and Jay Campbell on several pieces, and perform them in a concert on 25 September 2022, during the festival Klangspuren. They will also be invited to attend festival events during the week (rehearsals, concerts, discussion panels).

Besides working with JACK Quartet, one string quartet will also have the possibility to work with composer Natacha Diels on her piece Beautiful Trouble.

JACK QUARTET

Hailed by The New York Times as “our leading new-music foursome”, the JACK Quartet is one of the most acclaimed, renowned, and respected groups performing today. JACK has maintained an unwavering commitment to their mission of performing and commissioning new works, giving voice to underheard composers, and cultivating an ever-greater sense of openness toward contemporary classical music. The quartet was selected as Musical America’s 2018 “Ensemble of the Year”, named to WQXR’s “19 for 19 Artists to Watch”, and awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant. Recent engagements during the 2020/21 season included performances at the Miller Theatre, National Sawdust, Library of Congress, and Walker Arts Center, as well as a project with Eliott Reed at the MoMA PS1 entitled This Longing Vessel, and Beautiful Trouble, a digital billboard truck performance with Natacha Diels.

Through intimate relationships with today’s most creative voices, JACK embraces close collaboration with the composers they perform, leading to a radical embodiment of the technical, musical, and emotional aspects of their work. The quartet has worked with artists such as Julia Wolfe, George Lewis, Chaya Czernowin, Helmut Lachenmann, Caroline Shaw, and Simon Steen-Andersen, with upcoming and recent premieres including works by Tyshawn Sorey, Sabrina Schroeder, John Luther Adams, Clara Iannotta, Philip Glass, Catherine Lamb, Lester St. Louis, and John Zorn. JACK’s all-access initiative, JACK Studio, commissions a selection of artists each year, who will receive money, workshop time, mentorship, and resources to develop new work to be performed and recorded by the quartet.
