Jazzon is composition award contest and special network of EU jazz institutions. The competition will be carried out by cooperating EU institutions, national coordinators. Young musicians are called to enter the competition by sending a composition to the national coordinators. LokalPatriot (Slovenia), KDZ-MIC (Croatio) an mica-austria initiated (Austira). As Jazzon intends to stimulate younger and not yet fully acclaimed artists, the contestants should not be older then 35 years. The deadline for the submission of the compositions is May 1st, 2011.
Musical genres
Jazz, latin, fusion, contemporary (improvised) music.
General conditions
Author of a composition must be a citizen or have a permanent address in Slovenia, Croatia or Austria. Each author can only compete with one composition which has not yet been published on a sound carrier or presented in the mass media (television, radio, or internet). In questionable circumstances, the organizers can discard the problematic compositions.
Age limit
As Jazzon intends to stimulate younger and not yet fully acclaimed artists, the contestants should not be older then 35 years at the time of application.
Instrumentation
Compositions will be performed by the international band which includes the following instruments: (1) alto saxophone, (2) tenor saxophone, (3) rhodes, (4) double bass and (5) drums.
Technical requirements
Every application should contain the following elements:
1. The leadsheet in a readable notation for C-instruments. If there is a counter melody or if the melody is harmonized, it should be included on the sheet. The harmony (chords / chord progression in jazz symbols) should be indicated. A space for jazz improvisation (solo form) should be properly indicated. The tempo and style of the performance (swing, latin, funk etc.) or any other special requests should also be indicated (such as rhythmic accents, bass patterns, etc).
2. The parts for individual instruments (properly transposed if necessary).
3. The composition (leadsheet and parts) must have a clearly indicated title. Scores and parts must not be signed while the pre-selection process is anonymous. An envelope, containing the title of the composition, name and last name, date of birth, post address, telephone and e-mail of the composer, should be enclosed separately. The envelopes will remain in the archives of the organizers and the music material will be sent to the pre-selection jury.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
-The subject of evaluation is the composition (melody, rhythm and harmony) and not so much the arranging skills.
-Authors should keep in mind technical and temporal constraints of the performers when planning the length and complexity of the compositions. The approximate total performance time of a single composition (including the solos) should be about five minutes. The composers should also consider that the compositions are to be performed live so the performers should have no major difficulties in reading the music (the format, size, number of pages, page turns).

Deadline
The deadline for the submission of the compositions is May 1st, 2011.
Pre-selection
In the pre-selection process, each jury in cooperating countries will select 3 compositions to be performed at the finals. The results will be communicated to the applicants by e-mail till July 10, 2011. Among the selected best three compositions, each jury will single out the Jazzon National Award winning composition (winners of Jazzon Slovenija 2011, Jazzon Hrvatska 2011, and Jazzon Österreich 2011); however, the results will not become public until the Finals.
The final evaluation
The three selected Jazzon National Award winning compositions (one from Slovenia, one from Croatia, and one from Austria), selected by the juries in the pre-selection, will be passed on to the Jazzon international jury to decide upon the Jazzon Alpe-Adria Master Award. As in the pre-selection, the decision will be based on evaluating scores and will not be public before the Finals.
Finals
The finals of the Jazzon Alpe-Adria 2011 composition award will be hosted by the Jazzinty international Musical Workshop & Festival in Novo mesto. Nine selected compositions will be performed on August 17, 2011. All the authors will be invited to attend the concert and stay in town overnight at the organizer’s expense.
Audience Award
After the performance, the audience will vote for the best composition to decide upon the Jazzon Audience Award 2011.
Performers
The compositions of the Jazzon 2011 finals will be played by an International Jazzon Quintet.
Preparation
Each finalist has a right to attend the band rehearsals in the final phase of preparation (a day before the concert) for 30 minutes to express his wishes/comments regarding the performance. In the final stage, the bandleader is autonomous in his decisions (regarding interpretation, selection of instruments, order of solos etc.) and responsible for the appropriate quality of performance.

The winner of Jazzon Alpe-Adria will be offered to play 3 concerts (in SI/CRO/AUT) in the course of 1 year; concerts will be organized by local coordinators to their best (for example: in Slovenia, the winner will be able to play at Jazzinty festival next summer).
* All applicants agree that the organizers are allowed to publish the recording of the final concert on a sound carrier and on the website Jazzinty and of the score facsimile on the same address. All publications of the organizers are non-exclusive.
