THEIR BIGGEST HIT TRANSFORMED THE TWO VORARLBERG VILLAGES OF MELLAU AND SCHOPPERNAU, PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN TO MOST AUSTRIANS, INTO MYSTICAL DESTINATIONS OF INTOXICATED NOCTURNAL WALKS. BUT ACCORDING TO HMBC MEMBERS BARTHOLOMÄUS NATTER AND PHILIPP LINGG, RATHER THAN JUST THROW UP YOU CAN EAT VERY WELL THERE TOO.
WHERE DO YOU FIND MUSICAL INSPIRATION?
Bartholomäus Natter: At home, in the countryside, on the mountain.
Philipp Lingg: Hiking through the mountains. On a balcony with a view.
NAME A LIFE-CHANGING MUSICAL EVENT THAT YOU EXPERIENCED IN AUSTRIA.
BN: Every year without fail, the musical fete of the Bregenz woods (Bregenzerwälder Bezirksmusikfest) is a fantastic event.
PL: There have been many, among them the Szene-Open Air 2010, evenings at Poolbar or Treibhaus in Innsbruck and 20/10/2010 at Flex in Vienna. That changed my life because before then I had always been at those locations as part of the audience.
WHICH LIVE VENUES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO BANDS TRAVELLING TO AUSTRIA, AND WHERE DO YOU GO TO DISCOVER NEW MUSIC YOURSELVES?
BN: Conrad Sohm Dornbirn, Rauch Club Feldkirch, Remise Bludenz, Spielboden Dornbirn, and when I happen to be in Innsbruck I might go down to Treibhaus.
PL: Kulturverein Bahnhof and Jöslar in Andelsbuch. Freudenhaus is a big marquee tent for theatre and concerts that is put up for the festival Seelax in Bregenz and Schaulust in Lustenau. Apart from that there is the Wirtschaft Dornbirn, the Szene Lustenau, the Fabriggli in Buchs, Kino Landeck, Sonderbar and Rauch Club in Feldkirch, the Altes Kino in Rankweil, the Adler in Schoppernau and the Weekender in Innsbruck.
WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU SHOW YOUR VISITORS?
PL: The Üntschenspitze is perfectly suited for a day off. Clear your head by climbing a mountain with a summit cross at the top. By the way, there are some chalets along the hiking routes where you get excellent catering. The Werkraum-Haus, the Angelika Kauffmann-Museum und the Landesmuseum exhibit the arts and crafts of the Bregenz woodsm and at Kunsthaus Bregenz there is contemporary art. But basically, culinary rambling through the Bregenz woods would be the ideal way of getting to know the food and the landscape of the Austrian west.
