The 18th edition of the Bucharest International Jazz Competition, taking place from July 5-13, 2024, is now taking applications for bands!

The Bucharest International Jazz Competition debuted in 2007, with an impressive first-year participation rate of 30 bands from 25 countries. The trend has continued – now rated one of the top events of its kind in the world, this year’s competition will feature 21 bands from four continents. Just the facts

Applicants must be born after July 1, 1979; however, the bandleader can be older than 45 years of age. Bands may consist up up to 6 members, including instrumentalists and vocalists. Individuals can also apply for the jam session competition.

  • Applications must include the application form (see application page), 2-3 digital recordings of pieces in different styles, two band photos, the (norefundable) registration fee of €140, a short bio, tech rider and copies of each member’s documents.
  • Contestants selected by the jury will perform in the semifinal round: 50-60 minutes in a concert hall, 50-60 minutes in an unconventional space, and 60-80 minutes in jam sessions.
  • Winners of the semifinal round will progress to the final round, performing 30-40 in the concert hall and in an unconventional space.
  • The prizes are in cash (the grand prize is €1200) and concert engagements for one or two of the finalist bands. Prizewinners will also be given prioritized considerations for other events organized by jmEvents.ro, the festival organizer.
