About ZNAP
The music of Znap, it seems, is conceived from rhythm: it develops from intricate, surprisingly changing grooves, which give the thematic melodies an idiosyncratic, unorthodox spin and yet always give room to cool swinging sensuality. And despite all the technical sophistication, and the contrasting dramaturgies that characterize the individual pieces, the music seems compact and coherent – as if Leonhard Skorupa, Gregor Aufmesser and Lukas Aichinger had not just joined forces to form Znap in Vienna in 2017, but had done so while sitting in the sandbox decades prior. You can listen to them on the two albums released so far: “Homo Digitalis” (2018) and “Boa Boa” (2021).
As it is, Skorupa, can confidently be called one of the most exciting figures on the young Austrian jazz scene at the moment, since he is in charge of a whole series of lively and original-sounding projects ranging from Woody Black 4 to the Sketchbook Quartet and the Sketchbook Orchestra. Gregor Aufmesser is equally successful with his septet Aufmessers Schneide, and Lukas Aichinger is not only busy, but also the winner of the Ö1 Jazz Scholarship 2019. Pretty good conditions for an exceptional evening!
In cooperation with the Ö1 jazz department.
